Category: Network Fault Management, Vendor: Ericsson

Description: Manages enhanced SNMP notification filtering, throttling, and delivery control on Redback SmartEdge BRAS platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is RBN-NOTIFY-ENHANCE-MIB?

RBN-NOTIFY-ENHANCE-MIB is a Redback Networks (now Ericsson) enterprise MIB that augments the standard SNMP notification framework on SmartEdge devices with extra context objects attached to traps, such as chassis slot, card name/operation, circuit ID, and logical group name. It does not model a specific subsystem's data directly; instead it exposes varbind objects that get bundled into other RBN traps to give operators richer fault/status context. In monitoring terms, it strengthens visibility into hardware and software events by identifying exactly which slot, line card, or circuit a fault notification pertains to, useful for card insertion/removal, card operational-state changes, and other hardware-adjacent alarms. It is explicitly designed to extend/complement other RBN feature MIBs' notification definitions rather than standing alone, so it has an inherent dependency on those other RBN MIBs' trap definitions. It is deployed across SmartEdge chassis-based platforms wherever more granular slot/card/circuit identification in traps is needed. Engineers can download the RBN-NOTIFY-ENHANCE-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RBN-NOTIFY-ENHANCE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ericsson/Redback SmartEdge BRAS
  • SmartEdge chassis-based edge router

Monitoring Examples

When another RBN feature MIB fires a notification, rbnNESlot and rbnNECardName/rbnNECardOp are typically included as extra varbinds to tell the operator which physical slot and line card experienced a change (e.g., insertion, removal, reset). rbnNECircuitId pinpoints a specific subscriber circuit affected by a fault, and rbnNEGroupName associates the event with a logical port/interface group, letting an NMS correlate a card-level event with the exact circuits or groups impacted.

What Can Be Monitored

  • affected chassis slot
  • line card name and operation
  • affected circuit ID
  • affected interface group
