Description: Monitors line and service card operational state, resets, and hardware faults on SmartEdge.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is RBN-CARDMON-MIB?
RBN-CARDMON-MIB is a Redback Networks (now Ericsson SmartEdge) MIB that monitors the operational state of controller, I/O, and system cards -- the field-replaceable line/control cards in a chassis-based SmartEdge router. It exposes hardware fault and alarm data: active card alarms with slot, alarm type, timestamp, description, probable cause, severity, and service-affecting flag, plus card statistics for tracking events over time. This is fundamentally a hardware health/fault MIB -- it is used to monitor card-level faults, hardware alarm conditions, and reset/restart events on individual chassis slots, giving operators early warning of failing hardware before a full outage occurs. It works alongside standard entity/chassis MIBs (such as ENTITY-MIB) that identify the physical cards this monitoring applies to, and is Redback/Ericsson-specific in its alarm modeling. It is deployed on Ericsson SmartEdge/SSR chassis-based routers wherever slot-level hardware fault monitoring is required, typically relying on RBN-CARDMON-MIB SNMP monitoring in carrier broadband access and edge-routing environments.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RBN-CARDMON-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Ericsson SmartEdge Multi-service Edge Router (MSER)
- Ericsson SM Metro Ethernet platform
- Ericsson Smart Service Router (SSR)
Monitoring Examples
An operator would poll rbnCardAlarmActiveTable/rbnCardAlarmActiveEntry, keyed by rbnCardAlarmSlot and rbnCardAlarmActiveIndex, to see whether a line card has an active rbnCardAlarmId with high rbnCardAlarmSeverity and rbnCardAlarmServiceAffecting set true, indicating a hardware fault currently impacting traffic. The rbnCardAlarmDescription and rbnCardAlarmProbableCause fields help triage whether the issue is a temperature, power, or hardware failure condition on that slot. Trending rbnCardStatsTable alongside repeated alarms on the same rbnCardAlarmSlot over rbnCardAlarmDateAndTime would reveal a card intermittently failing and due for replacement, and rbnCardMonMIBNotifications would fire traps to alert operators in real time.
What Can Be Monitored
- active card hardware alarms
- alarm severity and service-affecting status
- card slot alarm history/timestamps
- card statistics/reset counts
