Description: Manages SmartEdge Server Engine (SSE) hardware configuration and operational status on Redback SmartEdge BRAS platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is RBN-SSE-MIB?

RBN-SSE-MIB is a Redback Networks (later Ericsson) private MIB for the SmartEdge Server Engine (SSE), a file-server card/module used within Redback SmartEdge BRAS platforms to provide subscriber file storage in groups and partitions. It exposes hardware/module configuration and status objects for file-server groups, including group state, operating mode, RAID mode, and which physical slot is acting as primary, secondary, or active for a group, along with partition-level detail and dedicated alarm notifications. Its monitoring value is squarely in hardware/module health and redundancy status: confirming which slot is currently active versus standby, whether a group's RAID mode is healthy, and whether an alarm has been raised on the SSE subsystem, all of which are early indicators of storage-module hardware failure or failover events. It is deployed as part of the broader Redback SmartEdge MIB family and depends on general SmartEdge chassis/slot conventions used across other Redback MIBs. It is typically deployed on Redback (Ericsson) SmartEdge BRAS platforms providing broadband subscriber management with SSE file-server modules installed. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the RBN-SSE-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RBN-SSE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Redback (Ericsson) SmartEdge BRAS with SmartEdge Server Engine (SSE) module

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll rbnFSGroupTable/rbnFSGroupEntry to read rbnFSGroupState, rbnFSGroupMode, and rbnFSGroupRaidMode, confirming the file-server group is healthy and correctly mirrored, then check rbnFSPrimarySlot, rbnFSSecondarySlot, and rbnFSActiveSlot to see whether a failover has occurred (active slot differs from primary). rbnFSGroupRevert indicates whether the group is configured to revert to the primary slot once it recovers. rbnFSPartitionTable/rbnFSPartitionEntry would be checked for partition-level status, and rbnSseMIBNotifications would deliver a trap the moment a group state change or RAID degradation is detected.

What Can Be Monitored

  • file-server group state and mode
  • RAID mode/health
  • active vs. primary/secondary slot
  • partition status
  • SSE alarm notifications

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using rbnFSGroupState OID:

Select a Redback (Ericsson) SmartEdge BRAS with SmartEdge Server Engine (SSE) file-server module as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type rbnFSGroupState into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports the service state of the File Server Group. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an INTEGER-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value is anything other than 'up', since that indicates the condition this object reports has changed to one worth investigating. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
