Description: Manages logical interface configuration, encapsulation, and statistics on Ericsson SmartEdge BRAS platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is RBN-IF-MIB?

RBN-IF-MIB is an interface-statistics extension MIB for Redback/Ericsson SmartEdge BRAS (Broadband Remote Access Server) platforms, extending the standard IETF IF-MIB's ifTable with additional high-capacity counters for logical interfaces. It exposes 64-bit ("HC") counters for IPv4 and IPv6 unicast and multicast octets and packets per interface, supplementing what the base ifTable/ifXTable provide. Its monitoring role is performance-focused: these high-capacity byte/packet counters let an operator accurately track throughput on high-speed broadband aggregation interfaces without counter wraparound, and unexpected drops or stalls in these counters can reveal a failing subscriber interface or encapsulation problem on the BRAS. As the module description explicitly states, it directly extends IF-MIB and is meaningless without that base standard providing ifIndex and general interface identity. It is deployed on Ericsson (formerly Redback) SmartEdge routers acting as broadband/BRAS aggregation devices in service-provider access networks. Engineers can download the RBN-IF-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RBN-IF-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ericsson (Redback) SmartEdge BRAS routers

Monitoring Examples

A service provider's monitoring system would poll rbnIfTable/rbnIfEntry (keyed by the same ifIndex as IF-MIB) for rbnIfHCInIPv4Octets/rbnIfHCOutIPv4Octets and their IPv6 counterparts to track per-subscriber-interface throughput at high precision. rbnIfHCInIPv4MulticastPkts/rbnIfHCOutIPv4MulticastPkts and the IPv6 multicast equivalents would be checked when diagnosing IPTV or multicast service delivery issues, where a stalled counter points to a multicast forwarding problem on that logical interface.

What Can Be Monitored

  • high-capacity IPv4/IPv6 input/output octets per interface
  • high-capacity IPv4/IPv6 multicast packets per interface

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using rbnIfHCInIPv4Octets OID:

Select an Ericsson (Redback) SmartEdge BRAS router (high-capacity per-interface IPv4/IPv6 counters) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type rbnIfHCInIPv4Octets into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The total number of IPv4 octets received on the interface, including framing characters. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
