rbnIfHCInIPv4Octets

Module: RBN-IF-MIB

OID (symbolic): RBN-IF-MIB::rbnIfHCInIPv4Octets

OID (numeric): 1.3.6.1.4.1.2352.2.57.0.1.1.1

Node type: OBJECT-TYPE

Type: Counter64

Access: read-only

Description: The total number of IPv4 octets received on the interface, including framing characters.

Discontinuities in the value of this counter can occur at re-initialization of the management system, and at other times as indicated by the value of ifCounterDiscontinuityTime in ifXTable in IF-MIB.

What is rbnIfHCInIPv4Octets?

This is a 64-bit counter of the total IPv4 octets received on the interface, including framing characters, as an extension row that augments the standard ifTable. Because it is a High Capacity counter rather than the 32-bit ifInOctets, it stays accurate for tracking inbound IPv4 volume on high-speed links where a 32-bit counter would wrap too often. An admin graphing this OID on a 10 Gbps uplink would see it climb steadily rather than reset every few minutes, and a sudden discontinuity in the count lines up with ifCounterDiscontinuityTime in ifXTable, signaling a reinitialization rather than a real traffic drop.

Start monitoring Ericsson (Redback) SmartEdge BRAS router (high-capacity per-interface IPv4/IPv6 counters) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Create custom SNMP monitor using the RBN-IF-MIB::rbnIfHCInIPv4Octets OID value, configure state conditions and alerts, and monitor any Ericsson (Redback) SmartEdge BRAS router (high-capacity per-interface IPv4/IPv6 counters) from a single console.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Select an Ericsson (Redback) SmartEdge BRAS router (high-capacity per-interface IPv4/IPv6 counters) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type rbnIfHCInIPv4Octets into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The total number of IPv4 octets received on the interface, including framing characters. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
