Category: LAN Management
Description: Detects NMS Communications network loops on switch ports and triggers protective shutdown or trap actions.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is NMS-LOOPBACK-DETECT-MIB?
NMS-LOOPBACK-DETECT-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB from NMS Communications for detecting Layer 2 network loops on switch ports and triggering protective actions such as port shutdown or SNMP trap generation. It exposes a global enable/disable configuration object alongside a per-port table tracking loopback-detection state for each switch interface. Its monitoring value is centered on network/software fault detection -- identifying which ports have detected a loop condition -- functioning as an early-warning and protective mechanism rather than reporting hardware temperature or power status. No explicit dependency on other MIBs is evident, though it complements standard interface (IF-MIB) indexing for identifying affected ports. It is deployed on NMS Communications switches in enterprise LANs to automatically detect and contain accidental cabling loops that could otherwise cause broadcast storms, making NMS-LOOPBACK-DETECT-MIB SNMP monitoring a standard safeguard in enterprise LAN deployments.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NMS-LOOPBACK-DETECT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- nms Co., Ltd. managed switch (Layer 2 loopback detection, vendor unidentified)
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would check ldEnable to confirm loopback detection is globally active, then poll ldPortTable/ldPortTableEntry per port to see which interfaces have flagged a detected loop. A port showing an active loopback-detected state would reveal a miswired patch cable creating a Layer 2 loop, prompting the switch's protective shutdown of that port to prevent a broadcast storm.
What Can Be Monitored
- global loopback detection enable state
- per-port loopback detection status
- loop-triggered protective action
