Category: Network Management

Description: Defines NMS Communications Hardware Abstraction Layer hardware fault and event notification traps.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is NMS-HAL-TRAP?

NMS-HAL-TRAP is a vendor-specific MIB from NMS Communications defining SNMP notifications (traps) generated by the device's Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL), the firmware layer that mediates access to physical hardware components. It exposes fault and event data covering hardware-level conditions rather than a large set of pollable counters, focusing on notification of state changes as they occur. Its role in monitoring is squarely on hardware status: it is designed to alert operators to hardware faults, MAC address changes, and other low-level equipment events so failing components can be identified quickly without constant polling. It builds on the standard SNMP notification (TRAP-TYPE/NOTIFICATION-TYPE) framework and is specific to NMS's proprietary HAL implementation. It is typically deployed alongside other NMS Communications MIBs on media gateway or signaling hardware to provide real-time fault alerts to a network management station, and administrators can perform an NMS-HAL-TRAP download to load these trap definitions into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NMS-HAL-TRAP. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • nms Co., Ltd. switching hardware (HAL fault traps, vendor unidentified)

Monitoring Examples

The module description references a current MAC address number object, suggesting the MIB reports the count or identity of MAC addresses associated with hardware interfaces as part of its trap payload. An administrator would configure the NMS to receive HAL traps and alert when an unexpected MAC address count change or hardware fault notification arrives, which could indicate a faulty NIC or unauthorized hardware swap. Because the sample object list is empty, further object-level detail cannot be confirmed beyond this description.

What Can Be Monitored

  • hardware fault notifications
  • current MAC address count
  • hardware abstraction layer events
