Description: Configures Nortel Magellan Passport SNMP agent community strings, trap destinations, and access control.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Nortel-Magellan-Passport-BaseSnmpMIB?

Nortel-Magellan-Passport-BaseSnmpMIB is a Nortel private enterprise MIB for the Magellan Passport WAN switching platform, providing base-level configuration of the device's own SNMP agent — community strings/provisioning, trap-destination and authentication-trap enable settings, and row-status-managed provisioning tables. It is fundamentally an SNMP-agent self-management/configuration MIB rather than a device-health telemetry MIB: it governs how the Passport node itself is managed and which events (v1/v2 authentication traps, alarm-as-trap settings) get forwarded to management stations, rather than exposing counters for its own hardware. It does, however, indirectly touch fault/alarm monitoring through vrSnmpAlarmsAsTraps, which controls whether the platform's internal alarms are surfaced as SNMP traps — a bridge to the platform's broader alarm subsystem. It depends on and configures how the standard SNMP framework (community-based SNMPv1/v2c security) behaves on the Passport node, alongside Nortel's proprietary component/provisioning model (vrSnmpComponentName, vrSnmpStorageType). It is deployed on Nortel Magellan Passport ATM/Frame Relay WAN switches for managing the node's own SNMP access control and alarm-notification behavior. Engineers can download the Nortel-Magellan-Passport-BaseSnmpMIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Nortel-Magellan-Passport-BaseSnmpMIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nortel Magellan Passport ATM/Frame Relay WAN switches

Monitoring Examples

An admin would use vrSnmpProvTable/vrSnmpProvEntry (indexed by vrSnmpIndex) alongside vrSnmpRowStatusTable/vrSnmpRowStatusEntry to provision or remove SNMP community/access entries on a Passport node, confirming vrSnmpV1EnableAuthenTraps or vrSnmpV2EnableAuthenTraps are set so unauthorized access attempts generate authentication-failure traps. Checking vrSnmpAlarmsAsTraps confirms whether the node's internal alarm conditions are being forwarded as SNMP traps to the NMS, critical for ensuring hardware/software faults on the Passport switch aren't silently missed. vrSnmpComponentName and vrSnmpStorageType identify which internal component a given provisioning row applies to and whether it is persisted or volatile.

What Can Be Monitored

  • SNMP community/provisioning entries
  • authentication-trap enable settings (v1/v2)
  • alarm-to-trap forwarding configuration
  • SNMP row status per provisioned entry
