Description: Monitors NBS device port connectivity state and physical link status.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is NBS-CONNECTIVITY-MIB?

NBS-CONNECTIVITY-MIB is a vendor-specific, read-only MIB that lists externally linked port pairs discovered via layer-2/3 discovery protocols between a local device and its directly connected neighbors. Its core structure is the nbsConnectivityTable, indexed by nbsConnectivitySourceIfIndex and nbsConnectivityOrdinalIndex (since one local port may have multiple discovered peers), with columns for the remote interface (nbsConnectivityDestIfIndex), the remote agent's address (nbsConnectivityDestAddr/DestV6Addr with corresponding AddrType objects), and an overall nbsConnectivityStatus enumeration (up/down/unknown/notSupported/sourceBlocked/destBlocked). A nbsConnectivityChanged NOTIFICATION-TYPE fires whenever a link transitions state, carrying the chassis/slot/port indices from NBS-CMMC-MIB along with the new status. This MIB is purely observational -- it reflects what discovery protocols have learned about neighboring equipment rather than configuring anything -- and depends on NBS-MIB for its registration point, NBS-CMMC-MIB for chassis/slot/port indices, IF-MIB for InterfaceIndex, and INET-ADDRESS-MIB for address typing. It is deployed on NBS-branded switching platforms, where NBS-CONNECTIVITY-MIB SNMP monitoring is used to detect unexpected link status changes or blocked ports between adjacent devices.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NBS-CONNECTIVITY-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • NBS-branded switching platforms (vendor-neutral naming in source; no specific product line identified)

Monitoring Examples

An operator walks nbsConnectivityTable for a chassis and cross-references nbsConnectivityDestIfIndex against the neighboring device's own interface table to confirm the discovered topology is correct; an nbsConnectivityStatus of down or sourceBlocked on an entry that should be forwarding traffic would flag a failed or blocked inter-switch link.

What Can Be Monitored

  • externally connected port pair table entries
  • remote interface index and address
  • link status (up/down/unknown/blocked)
  • IPv4 and IPv6 destination address type
  • connectivity-change notifications

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using nbsConnectivityStatus OID:

Select a NBS-branded switching platform (neighbor discovery/link connectivity) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type nbsConnectivityStatus into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. This object is used to indicate the link status. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an INTEGER-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value is anything other than 'up', since that indicates the condition this object reports has changed to one worth investigating. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
