Description: Manages NBS Ethernet in the First Mile OAM configuration and link monitoring.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is NBS-EFM-MIB?
NBS-EFM-MIB is a private MIB from MRV Communications (branded NBS) that models IEEE 802.3ah Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) Operations, Administration and Maintenance (OAM) functionality on carrier Ethernet access equipment. It exposes data about OAM peer discovery, link mode negotiation, PDU configuration, capability flags, and remote peer identity such as vendor OUI and device ID. The MIB is primarily used to monitor the health and status of first-mile Ethernet links, tracking OAM session state to detect link faults, remote failure indications, and misconfigured peers before they escalate into service-affecting outages. It builds on the standard IEEE 802.3ah OAM concepts, layering NBS-specific product identifiers on top of that framework. It is typically deployed on MRV/NBS optical access and aggregation platforms used by carriers to manage last-mile Ethernet handoffs to customer premises equipment, where an NBS-EFM-MIB download helps carriers catch first-mile faults before they escalate into service-affecting outages.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NBS-EFM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- MRV/NBS optical Ethernet access switch
- carrier Ethernet demarcation device
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll nbsEfmOamTable/nbsEfmOamEntry, indexed by nbsEfmPhysicalIfIndex and nbsEfmOamIfIndex, to check nbsEfmOamState for a given link and confirm it has reached the OAM 'operational' state with its nbsEfmOamPeerIfIndex populated. If nbsEfmOamState drops out of the operational state or nbsEfmOamVendorOUI/nbsEfmOamVendorDeviceId suddenly changes, that signals a peer device swap or a flapping first-mile link needing investigation. The nbsEfmOamFlagsField and nbsEfmOamPduCfg objects reveal negotiated OAM capabilities, useful for diagnosing why loopback or fault-signaling features aren't working as expected.
What Can Be Monitored
- EFM OAM session state
- OAM peer interface identity
- remote vendor OUI/device ID
- OAM PDU configuration
- OAM capability flags
- physical interface OAM mode
