Category: Protocol: LLDP, Standard: IEEE 802

Description: Updated IEEE 802.3 LLDP extension MIB (version 2) with enhanced TLV objects for energy-efficient Ethernet and additional PHY attributes.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is LLDP-EXT-DOT3-V2-MIB?

LLDP-EXT-DOT3-V2-MIB is a vendor-neutral IEEE standards MIB extending the LLDP-V2-MIB with 802.3 organizationally-defined TLVs exchanged between directly-connected Ethernet devices, covering auto-negotiation, MAU (physical layer) type, and Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) power-class information. It exposes local and remote port configuration/data for auto-negotiation capabilities and advertised speed/duplex, the operational MAU type of a port, and per-port PoE power class. Its monitoring value is in detecting link-partner mismatches and PoE issues: comparing local versus discovered-neighbor auto-negotiation settings reveals duplex/speed mismatches, while power-class data confirms PoE devices such as phones or APs are receiving the expected power class. It branches from the base LLDP-V2-MIB (IEEE 802.1AB-2009) discovery framework, on which it fully depends for the underlying neighbor-discovery mechanism. It is deployed on any vendor's Ethernet switches, routers, or NICs that support LLDP for physical-layer neighbor discovery. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the LLDP-EXT-DOT3-V2-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in LLDP-EXT-DOT3-V2-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • Ethernet switch, router, or NIC supporting LLDP (IEEE 802.1AB/802.3)

Monitoring Examples

lldpV2Xdot3LocPortTable/lldpV2Xdot3LocPortEntry exposes lldpV2Xdot3LocPortAutoNegSupported, lldpV2Xdot3LocPortAutoNegEnabled, and lldpV2Xdot3LocPortAutoNegAdvertisedCap, plus the resulting lldpV2Xdot3LocPortOperMauType, letting an admin detect an autoneg/duplex mismatch against a discovered neighbor. lldpV2Xdot3LocPowerTable's lldpV2Xdot3LocPowerPortClass reports the PoE power class advertised on a port, useful for verifying a connected PoE endpoint is getting the expected power budget. lldpV2Xdot3PortConfigTable's lldpV2Xdot3PortConfigTLVsTxEnable shows which 802.3 TLVs a port is actively transmitting, which an admin would check if a neighbor isn't receiving expected auto-negotiation or power information.

What Can Be Monitored

  • local port auto-negotiation support/enabled
  • advertised auto-negotiation capabilities
  • operational MAU type
  • PoE power class per port
  • 802.3 TLV transmit-enable per port
