Description: IEEE 802.1 MIB for Provider Bridging (802.1ad) managing Q-in-Q VLAN stacking for provider Ethernet networks.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is IEEE8021-PB-MIB?

IEEE8021-PB-MIB is a vendor-neutral, standards-based IEEE MIB defined as part of IEEE 802.1Q, covering Provider Bridging (Q-in-Q), which lets a service provider transport multiple customer VLANs across a single provider VLAN by stacking VLAN tags. It exposes configuration tables for VID translation and customer VLAN (C-VID) registration, mapping customer-side VLAN tags to provider-side service VLAN (S-VID) tags, along with per-port untagged handling flags. Its monitoring value is largely configuration-state verification rather than hardware health: administrators use it to confirm that VLAN translation and registration entries on a provider bridge are correctly provisioned, and notifications alert on relevant state changes. As part of the IEEE 802.1Q family, it is tightly coupled to core 802.1Q bridging and VLAN concepts defined elsewhere in that same standard. It is typically deployed on carrier-grade Ethernet switches and provider edge bridges implementing Q-in-Q/VLAN stacking in metro or WAN Ethernet access networks. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the IEEE8021-PB-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in IEEE8021-PB-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • carrier Ethernet / provider bridge switches

Monitoring Examples

An operator would query ieee8021PbVidTranslationTable/ieee8021PbVidTranslationEntry to check that ieee8021PbVidTranslationLocalVid correctly maps to ieee8021PbVidTranslationRelayVid for a given port, confirming customer traffic is relayed on the intended internal VLAN. The ieee8021PbCVidRegistrationTable/ieee8021PbCVidRegistrationEntry lets an administrator verify that a customer VLAN (ieee8021PbCVidRegistrationCVid) is properly registered against a service VLAN (ieee8021PbCVidRegistrationSVid), and that ieee8021PbCVidRegistrationUntaggedPep/UntaggedCep flags match expected tagging behavior at the edge ports. A misconfigured translation or registration entry here is a common root cause of customer traffic being dropped or delivered on the wrong VLAN at a provider bridge.

What Can Be Monitored

  • VLAN ID (VID) translation mapping
  • customer VLAN (C-VID) to service VLAN (S-VID) registration
  • untagged port/edge configuration
  • row status of translation/registration entries
