icmpInErrors

Module: IP-MIB

OID (symbolic): IP-MIB::icmpInErrors

OID (numeric): 1.3.6.1.2.1.5.2

Node type: OBJECT-TYPE

Type: Counter32

Access: read-only

Description:

The number of ICMP messages which the entity received but determined as having ICMP-specific errors (bad ICMP checksums, bad length, etc.).

This object has been deprecated, as a new IP version-neutral table has been added. It is loosely replaced by icmpStatsInErrors.

What is icmpInErrors?

This deprecated counter tracks the number of ICMP messages received that contained errors such as invalid checksums or malformed lengths. Because this object is deprecated, newer implementations use the version-neutral icmpStatsInErrors for both IPv4 and IPv6. A network troubleshooter would examine this metric (on older systems) to detect ICMP protocol issues, corruption, or misconfigured endpoints sending malformed ICMP packets.

Examples

Walk all instances (SNMPv2c):

snmpwalk -v2c -c public <target> 1.3.6.1.2.1.5.2
snmpwalk -v2c -c public <target> IP-MIB::icmpInErrors

Get a specific instance (index 1):

snmpget -v2c -c public <target> 1.3.6.1.2.1.5.2.1
snmpget -v2c -c public <target> IP-MIB::icmpInErrors.1
