Description: INETMROUTE-STD-MIB module

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is INETMROUTE-STD-MIB?

INETMROUTE-STD-MIB is a vendor-neutral IETF standards-track MIB for managing IP Multicast routing state in a way that is independent of the specific multicast routing protocol in use (e.g. PIM-SM, PIM-DM, DVMRP), and supports both IPv4 and IPv6 addressing. It exposes configuration and operational data about multicast routing: interface participation, multicast route table entries, next-hop information, and related statistics/counters describing how multicast traffic is being forwarded through the router. Its monitoring role is centered on the software/control-plane status of multicast routing -- confirming that expected multicast routes exist, that interfaces are correctly enabled for multicast, and that traffic/packet counts on multicast routes match expectations, which helps catch multicast forwarding failures or misconfigured RPF (reverse path forwarding) checks. It depends on the underlying protocol-independent multicast (PIM) and general IP MIB frameworks, since it's designed to sit above whichever specific multicast protocol MIB is in use. It is typically deployed on routers and Layer 3 switches in networks carrying IPTV, video conferencing, or other multicast applications. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the INETMROUTE-STD-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in INETMROUTE-STD-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • IP multicast-capable router / Layer 3 switch

Monitoring Examples

This MIB has no sample runtime objects captured, but based on its stated purpose an administrator would poll the multicast route table to verify a specific (source, group) route exists with the expected incoming interface, and check per-route/per-interface packet counters to confirm multicast traffic volume matches expectations. An RPF-failure counter that grows or a route that unexpectedly disappears would indicate a multicast forwarding problem such as an interface flap or upstream router misconfiguration.

What Can Be Monitored

  • multicast route table entries
  • multicast interface enablement
  • multicast forwarding statistics/counters
  • RPF (reverse path forwarding) status
