Description: Manages IPX (Internetwork Packet Exchange) routing and interface configuration on HP/Comware devices supporting legacy Novell protocols.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HPN-ICF-IPX-MIB?

This MIB manages the legacy Novell IPX (Internetwork Packet Exchange) protocol stack on HP/Comware routers and switches, covering IPX interface configuration, RIP (routing) and SAP (service advertisement) state, and related statistics. It belongs to the HP/H3C ICF family and is organized into four functional groups: per-interface IPX configuration/statistics, RIP routing status, SAP service information, and general IPX protocol statistics. For monitoring purposes it exposes interface-level software state such as hpnicfIpxStatus (protocol enable state) and per-interface counters and settings via hpnicfIpxIfConfigTable, letting an operator confirm that legacy IPX routing and service advertisement are functioning correctly on a given interface. IPX is an older, largely deprecated Novell NetWare protocol with no relationship to modern IETF IP-based standard MIBs, so this module is entirely proprietary and legacy-oriented. It is deployed only in legacy environments where HP/Comware devices still route or bridge traffic for older Novell NetWare-based networks. Engineers can download the HPN-ICF-IPX-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HPN-ICF-IPX-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • HP/Comware router (legacy IPX/Novell NetWare environment)
  • HP/Comware switch
  • HP/H3C Comware routers and switches (legacy IPX/Novell NetWare support)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would check hpnicfIpxStatus to confirm IPX routing is globally enabled, then poll hpnicfIpxIfConfigTable/hpnicfIpxIfConfigEntry (indexed by hpnicfIpxIfIndex) to read hpnicfIpxIfNetId and hpnicfIpxIfNodeId for a given interface. If hpnicfIpxIfSplitHorizon or hpnicfIPxIfTick is misconfigured, RIP updates may fail to propagate across the IPX network, which the operator can correlate with route-table gaps reported under hpnicfIpxRip. hpnicfIpxSap exposes service advertisement state useful for confirming NetWare file/print services remain visible on the segment.

What Can Be Monitored

  • IPX protocol enable status
  • per-interface IPX network/node ID
  • RIP route status
  • SAP service advertisements
  • IPX interface encapsulation type
  • split-horizon/RIP timer settings

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using hpnicfIpxStatTotalReceives OID:

Select an HP/H3C Comware router or switch as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type hpnicfIpxStatTotalReceives into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The total number of packets received. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
