Description: HP ProCurve extension of the standard ENTITY-MIB providing enhanced physical component inventory for HP chassis-based devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HP-ENTITY-MIB?

HP-ENTITY-MIB is HP's early proprietary adaptation of the IETF Entity MIB (draft 7), created to give physical/logical entity inventory objects an assigned OID before the standard ENTITY-MIB was formally published as an RFC, and used on HP chassis-based (e.g. ProCurve) devices. It exposes a physical entity table describing each component in a device (module, card, fan, power supply, etc.) with description, vendor type, containment hierarchy, and class, plus a logical entity table describing the logical management entities the agent represents. Its monitoring value is hardware inventory and component-presence tracking: administrators can enumerate installed hardware components (hpEntPhysicalDescr, hpEntPhysicalClass) and their physical containment relationships (hpEntPhysicalContainedIn, hpEntPhysicalParentRelPos) to detect when a card, fan, or power supply is missing, added, or misidentified. It is explicitly derived from and intended to be superseded by the IETF ENTITY-MIB once standardized, making that RFC its direct successor/dependency. It is deployed on HP chassis-based networking equipment such as modular ProCurve switches with multiple slots and field-replaceable components. Engineers can download the HP-ENTITY-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HP-ENTITY-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • HP ProCurve chassis-based network switch

Monitoring Examples

An administrator walks hpEntPhysicalTable (hpEntPhysicalEntry, indexed by hpEntPhysicalIndex) to enumerate each installed component via hpEntPhysicalDescr and hpEntPhysicalClass, and uses hpEntPhysicalContainedIn/hpEntPhysicalParentRelPos to reconstruct the chassis's physical hierarchy (e.g. which slot a card occupies). The hpEntLogicalTable (hpEntLogicalEntry, hpEntLogicalIndex) shows the logical entities the SNMP agent represents, useful on chassis with multiple management contexts. If a fan or power supply module is removed or fails, its corresponding row disappears from or changes in hpEntPhysicalTable, alerting the admin to a hardware change or fault.

What Can Be Monitored

  • installed physical component inventory
  • component description/class/vendor type
  • physical containment hierarchy
  • logical entity mapping
