Category: Domain: Server Hardware, Domain: Storage, Vendor: IBM

Description: IBM MIB for RAID array configuration and status monitoring including logical drive, physical disk, and controller health.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is IBM-SYSTEM-RAID-MIB?

IBM-SYSTEM-RAID-MIB is an IBM vendor-specific MIB, derived from CIM classes (IBMPSG_RAIDController, IBMPSG_RAIDDiskDrive, referenced directly in each object's REFERENCE clause), that models RAID controller and physical disk configuration and status on IBM systems. It exposes ibmSystemRaidControllerTable with controller identity and firmware details (ibmSystemRaidControllerModel, ibmSystemRaidControllerBIOSVersion, ibmSystemRaidControllerFirmwareVersion, ibmSystemRaidControllerDriverVersion, ibmSystemRaidControllerSlot, ibmSystemRaidControllerStatus) and ibmSystemRaidDiskDriveTable with per-disk placement and health (ibmSystemRaidDiskDriveChannelID, ibmSystemRaidDiskDriveFirmware, ibmSystemRaidDiskDriveState, a numeric enumeration covering Standby, Defunct Hot Spare, Ready, Hot Spare, Online, Rebuild, and Reserved states, and ibmSystemRaidDiskDriveStatus). It also defines ibmSystemRaidTrap and ibmSystemRaidTrapInfo subtrees for RAID-related notifications. This data is useful for monitoring storage-array health, controller firmware consistency and disk-level failure or rebuild states, before a degraded array leads to data loss. It depends on IBM-SYSTEM-MIB for its base numeric/string types (Uint8, Uint16, String, etc.) and enterprise registration, and administrators can download the IBM-SYSTEM-RAID-MIB file for server hardware monitoring on IBM System x platforms with ServeRAID controllers.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in IBM-SYSTEM-RAID-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • IBM System x / xSeries servers with ServeRAID controllers

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls ibmSystemRaidDiskDriveState across ibmSystemRaidDiskDriveTable for each disk attached to a given controller; a drive reporting state 139 (Rebuild) or 8 (Defunct Disk Drive) instead of 137 (Online) would indicate a failed or actively-rebuilding disk that reduces the array's redundancy until it completes or is replaced.

What Can Be Monitored

  • RAID controller model/firmware/BIOS/driver versions
  • controller slot and status
  • physical disk drive state (online, rebuild, defunct, hot spare)
  • disk drive channel and firmware revision
  • RAID trap/notification objects
