What Is GWSMTPMIB?

This MIB module supports the Novell GroupWise SMTP Gateway, a mail relay agent that bridges Novell GroupWise messaging systems with standard Internet SMTP mail. It exposes gateway identification, uptime, and link status to both the internal GroupWise domain and foreign SMTP systems, along with message flow statistics (bytes and messages in/out) and error/status counters for both directions. Its monitoring emphasis is on software/service health, verifying the gateway process uptime, confirming both the GroupWise-side and foreign SMTP-side links are up, and tracking message throughput and error counts to catch mail delivery failures or backlogs. No explicit external MIB dependency is indicated, as it is a self-contained Novell vendor MIB. It is deployed on servers running the Novell GroupWise SMTP Gateway component, bridging GroupWise post offices to the broader Internet email system. Engineers can download the GWSMTPMIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

An administrator would poll gwsmtpTimeUp to confirm the gateway process hasn't recently restarted unexpectedly, and check gwsmtpLinkGroupWise and gwsmtpLinkFrgn to verify both the internal GroupWise link and external foreign SMTP link are operational. Comparing gwsmtpStatMsgsOut against gwsmtpStatMsgsIn over time would reveal a growing backlog of outbound mail, while a spike in gwsmtpStatErrorsOut would indicate delivery failures to foreign SMTP servers, prompting investigation into DNS or connectivity issues.
