Category: Device Management, Technology: Switching/L2, Vendor: Cabletron/Enterasys, Vendor: Edgecore

Description: Monitors module inventory, status, and operational state for modular ES-series switch chassis.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ES-MODULE-MIB?

ES-MODULE-MIB manages chassis module inventory and status for modular ES-series Ethernet switches, originating from Grand Junction Networks (an early Fast Ethernet switch vendor later acquired by Cisco), as evidenced by the 'grandjunction' and 'fastLink' object identifiers in its object tree. It exposes a per-slot module table covering module identity, hardware/firmware description, port capacity, and operational/administrative status. This is directly a hardware status MIB: it lets an operator see whether a line module in a chassis is up, down, or has been administratively taken out of service, and supports remotely resetting a faulty module. No dependency on other MIBs is apparent beyond standard SNMPv1 SMI conventions given its vintage. It would have been deployed to monitor early modular Fast Ethernet switch chassis in enterprise wiring closets. Engineers can download the ES-MODULE-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ES-MODULE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Grand Junction Networks / early Cisco ES-series modular Ethernet switch chassis

Monitoring Examples

esModuleTable/esModuleEntry, indexed by esModuleIndex, expose esModuleStatus and esModuleAdminStatus alongside esModuleDescr, esModuleID, esModuleVersion, and esModulePortCapacity. An operator polling esModuleStatus across all slots can detect a module that has gone out of service unexpectedly, cross-check esModuleVersion before a firmware upgrade, and invoke esModuleReset to remotely power-cycle a misbehaving module.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-slot module operational/admin status
  • module description/ID/version
  • module port capacity
  • chassis module capacity (slot count)
  • remote module reset control
