What Is ENTERASYS-IP-SLA-MIB?

ENTERASYS-IP-SLA-MIB is a proprietary Enterasys Networks MIB for configuring IP Service Level Agreement (SLA) probes that actively measure network performance, comparable in purpose to Cisco's IP SLA feature. It exposes global capacity objects for how many SLA config and data entries the device supports, plus a configuration table defining each probe's type, destination address/port, and probe name. Its monitoring value is performance measurement: results gathered by these probes (round-trip time and jitter, i.e., packet delay variation) let an administrator verify whether a service provider is meeting contracted SLA obligations, functioning as an active performance-monitoring feature rather than passive interface counters. It is a vendor-specific feature MIB with no stated dependency on a standard IETF IP-SLA MIB. It is deployed on Enterasys/Extreme Networks routers and switches used at network edges where WAN or service-provider SLA compliance needs to be actively verified. Engineers can download the ENTERASYS-IP-SLA-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ENTERASYS-IP-SLA-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would configure a probe via etsysIpSlaConfigTable/etsysIpSlaConfigEntry, setting etsysIpSlaConfigType, etsysIpSlaConfigDestType, etsysIpSlaConfigDestAddr, and etsysIpSlaConfigDestPort to target a remote SLA responder, then monitor etsysIpSlaEntriesInUse and etsysIpSlaDataEntriesInUse against etsysIpSlaMaxEntries and etsysIpSlaMaxDataEntries to ensure the device has not run out of probe capacity. The resulting round-trip-time and jitter data (reported elsewhere in the MIB's data tables) would be trended over time to detect a WAN link degrading beyond the provider's contracted SLA thresholds. etsysIpSlaConfigProbeName lets operators label probes meaningfully in a large-scale monitoring deployment.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using etsysIpSlaEntriesInUse OID:

Select an Enterasys Networks router/Layer 3 switch (legacy, later Extreme Networks) (IP SLA active probing) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type etsysIpSlaEntriesInUse into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The number of IP SLA entries currently configured within the system. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Gauge32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
