Description: Provides managed objects for controlling and monitoring APPN Extended Border Node (EBN) capabilities, which isolate topology between SNA subnets.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring EBN-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is EBN-MIB?

The EBN-MIB is a MIB module in the IBM/IETF SNANAU family, used to manage APPN (Advanced Peer-to-Peer Networking) Extended Border Node capabilities that isolate SNA (Systems Network Architecture) subnet topologies from one another. It exposes objects describing directory/search caching, LU (logical unit) name-to-subnet mappings, and inter-subnet route and class-of-service search results used when resolving resources across SNA subnets. In monitoring terms it tracks software-level operational status of the EBN function on a node or gateway - directory cache size, cache search timers, and the state of resolved cross-subnet routes - rather than physical hardware health. It builds on the broader SNANAU/APPN MIB framework (snanauMIB) for its object identifier structure and conventions. It is typically deployed on SNA-to-IP gateways or APPN border node routers in legacy mainframe/SNA environments that still interconnect isolated SNA subnetworks, making this EBN-MIB reference a useful guide for administrators supporting older APPN infrastructure.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in EBN-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • SNA/APPN border node routers or gateways
  • IBM mainframe-network interconnect devices
  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB for APPN networking equipment

Monitoring Examples

An administrator polls ebnDirTable/ebnDirEntry to see which ebnDirLuName values have been cached along with their ebnDirSubnetAffiliation, confirming that LU-to-subnet resolution is working, and watches ebnMaxSearchCache/ebnSearchCacheTime for signs the cache is thrashing from excessive cross-subnet searches. The ebnIsRscvTable (indexed by ebnIsRscvCpName/ebnIsRscvPcid) exposes the ebnIsRscvDestinationRoute and ebnIsRscvDestinationCos chosen for inter-subnet searches, letting an admin confirm a search resolved correctly. Stale or empty entries in ebnIsRscvTable would flag failed cross-subnet resolution.

What Can Be Monitored

  • directory cache entries and LU-to-subnet mappings
  • search cache size and timers
  • cross-subnet route resolution results
  • destination class of service for inter-subnet searches
  • APPN border node topology state

RFC description

Defines managed objects for monitoring and controlling APPN Extended Border Node (EBN) capabilities, supporting topology isolation across SNA subnets.

Start monitoring SNA/APPN border node router or gateway (vendor-neutral IETF/IBM standard) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
