Description: Manages QinQ (IEEE 802.1ad) double-tagged VLAN configuration for provider bridging and VLAN stacking.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Double-VLAN-MIB?

This switch vendor MIB manages Double VLAN tagging, also known as QinQ or IEEE 802.1ad provider bridging, which stacks an additional service-provider VLAN tag around customer VLAN traffic for VLAN scalability across provider networks. It exposes configuration data including the global enable state, per-VLAN double-VLAN control entries (SPVID, name, TPID/EtherType used for the outer tag), and port-role assignments (uplink, access, unknown, or ports pending deletion). Its monitoring value is configuration-state verification: confirming double-tagging is globally enabled, checking which ports are configured as uplink versus access for a given service VLAN, and validating the TPID matches what upstream provider equipment expects, all of which affect whether QinQ traffic is tagged/forwarded correctly. It has a conceptual dependency on the standard 802.1Q/802.1ad VLAN bridging model though it is implemented as a private extension. It is deployed on managed switches used at service-provider or enterprise network edges that need to tunnel multiple customer VLANs transparently across a shared core. Engineers can download the Double-VLAN-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Double-VLAN-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • D-Link managed switch (Double VLAN/QinQ tagging) — Identified as D-Link via its DLINK-ID-REC-MIB import (D-Link's product-identification OID branch), despite the empty ORGANIZATION field previously read as 'no identifiable vendor'.

Monitoring Examples

An admin reads swDoubleVlanGlobalState to confirm QinQ is enabled switch-wide, then walks swDoubleVlanCtrlTable/swDoubleVlanCtrlEntry to inspect each swDoubleVlanSPVIDIndex entry's swDoubleVlanName, swDoubleVlanTPID, and its swDoubleVlanUplinkPorts versus swDoubleVlanAccessPorts assignments. A mismatched swDoubleVlanTPID value or an access port erroneously listed in swDoubleVlanUplinkPorts would reveal a misconfiguration likely to cause dropped or mistagged double-tagged frames.

What Can Be Monitored

  • global double-VLAN (QinQ) enable state
  • per-VLAN SPVID and name
  • outer tag TPID/EtherType
  • uplink port assignment
  • access port assignment
  • port status/deletion pending
