What Is CISCO-WAN-FR-CONN-MIB?

CISCO-WAN-FR-CONN-MIB is a Cisco WAN switching MIB for configuring Frame Relay connections, including DLCI (Data Link Connection Identifier) assignment, on Cisco MGX/BPX ATM+Frame Relay WAN switching platforms. It exposes per-channel configuration objects covering port number, DLCI, egress/ingress queue selection, queue depth, and congestion thresholds (ECN/DE), along with row status for provisioning connections, and documents Frame Relay-to-ATM interworking (SIW/NIW per FRF.8) concepts. As a monitoring tool it is used mainly for configuration and queue-health tracking: verifying a Frame Relay channel/DLCI is correctly provisioned and active, and watching ingress/egress queue depth and DE/ECN threshold objects to detect congestion or discard-eligible traffic buildup on a connection. It is closely tied to Cisco's broader WAN switching MIB suite (state and endpoint-mapping groups like frChanStateGrp and frEndPtMapGrp reference related connection-state and endpoint-mapping MIBs). It is deployed on Cisco MGX/BPX WAN switches at carrier or large-enterprise WAN edge sites providing Frame Relay and ATM interworking services, and administrators can download the CISCO-WAN-FR-CONN-MIB file to load it into their MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls frChanCnfGrpTable/frChanCnfGrpEntry keyed by chanNum and chanPortNum to confirm chanRowStatus is active for a given dLCI, verifying the Frame Relay connection is provisioned. Reviewing egressQDepth, egressQDEThresh, ingressQDepth, and ingressQECNThresh/ingressQDEThresh for that channel reveals whether the connection is approaching congestion, indicated by queue depth nearing its discard-eligible threshold, which would explain observed packet loss on that DLCI.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using frChanCnfChangeCount OID:

Select a Cisco MGX/BPX WAN switch (Frame Relay connections, legacy) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type frChanCnfChangeCount into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. This object is added only for FRSM12 card. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
