What Is CISCO-WAN-FR-CONN-STAT-MIB?

CISCO-WAN-FR-CONN-STAT-MIB is a Cisco Systems proprietary MIB reporting Frame Relay connection statistics on Cisco MGX WAN switches, including Frame-Relay-to-ATM Service Interworking (SIW) connections. Its per-channel counter table reports received frame and byte counts, counts specifically for frames marked Discard Eligible (DE), and counts of frames discarded (including discards tied to a shelf alarm condition). As a performance/hardware-status MIB it lets an administrator distinguish normal DE-marked congestion handling from outright frame discards possibly caused by a shelf-level alarm. It is deployed on Cisco MGX WAN switches carrying Frame Relay traffic. Engineers can download the CISCO-WAN-FR-CONN-STAT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using rcvFrames OID:

Select a Cisco MGX WAN switch (Frame Relay/SIW connections, legacy) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type rcvFrames into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of frames Received by the network (ingress) for this PVC end-point. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline (in Frames), since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.

Terminologies Used: SIW - Frame-Relay-to ATM Service Interworking FECN - Forward Explicit Congestion Notification. The FECN bit in Frame Relay header communicate network congestion to the endpoint in the forward direction. BECN - Backward Explicit Congestion Notification. The BECN bit in Frame Relay header communicate network congestion to the endpoint in the backward direction. DE - Discard Eligibility. The DE bit in Frame Relay header communicates the loss priority. A marked frame with a DE bit value of 1 is considered less important than other frames in transmission and should be discarded before frames with a DE bit value of zero. Tagged - Some of the statistics objects described in this MIB are applicable where the information is Set by the Switch/Service-Module. These objects contain word 'Tagged' in the name. For example : 'rcvFramesTaggedFECN'; This is the counter where FECN is set by the Switch in the frame received from the network. FECN was not set in the frame from the Network. The bit Set by the switch on an incoming or outgoing frame is called 'tagged' in this mib.
