Category: Cisco Devices, VPN and Security

Description: Manages IP-level encryption configuration and session statistics on Cisco devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-IP-ENCRYPTION-MIB?

CISCO-IP-ENCRYPTION-MIB is a Cisco enterprise MIB for the legacy IP-layer encryption service (Encryption Service Adapter, ESA) hardware on Cisco routers. It exposes configuration data such as which encryption algorithms are enabled, the encryption key timeout, and the number of crypto engines installed, alongside per-engine operational status. It is chiefly used to monitor the hardware health and software state of encryption cards -- tracking whether an ESA has been physically tampered with, whether it has authenticated correctly, and how many encrypted connections are currently active. It sits within Cisco's own router MIB hierarchy without a strong dependency on an external IETF standard. It is typically deployed on older Cisco routers fitted with hardware crypto engines protecting site-to-site IP traffic. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the CISCO-IP-ENCRYPTION-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-IP-ENCRYPTION-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco routers with hardware encryption (ESA) modules

Monitoring Examples

An admin polling cieEngineStatusTable/cieEngineStatusEntry, indexed by cieEngineCardIndex, can check cieEsaTampered and cieEsaAuthenticated for each engine to detect physical tampering or an authentication failure on an encryption card. cieNumberOfConnections shows how many encrypted sessions are active, and an unexpected drop to zero can signal a crypto engine failure. cieConfiguredAlgorithms and cieEncryptionKeyTimeout reveal the enabled encryption algorithms and key lifetime, useful for a compliance or security audit.

What Can Be Monitored

  • crypto engine status
  • tamper detection state
  • engine authentication state
  • number of active encrypted connections
  • configured encryption algorithms
  • encryption key timeout
