Category: Cisco Devices, IP and Core Protocols, SNMP Framework
Description: Declares SNMP agent capabilities for ICMP ping test operations on Cisco routing and switching platforms.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CISCO-PING-CAPABILITY?
CISCO-PING-CAPABILITY is a Cisco AGENT-CAPABILITIES module that declares which parts of CISCO-PING-MIB a given Cisco IOS/IOS-XE agent implementation actually supports, rather than defining any monitoring data itself. Agent-capabilities modules exist purely for SNMP conformance/compatibility purposes, letting management systems determine feature-support boundaries (e.g., which ping test object groups are implemented) for a given software release. As such it exposes no interface, environmental, performance, or fault objects of its own and has no direct role in monitoring hardware or software status — it is a static compatibility statement, not a live data source. It is entirely dependent on and meaningless without CISCO-PING-MIB, whose object groups it references and qualifies. It is used internally by SNMP management platforms during MIB compliance/capability negotiation with Cisco routing and switching platforms, not queried directly by operators. Engineers can download the CISCO-PING-CAPABILITY file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-PING-CAPABILITY. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cisco IOS/IOS-XE routers and switches supporting CISCO-PING-MIB (Cisco-specific conformance module)
Monitoring Examples
This is a conformance/AGENT-CAPABILITIES module with no runtime data objects — the sample_objects list is empty and the module simply maps CISCO-PING-MIB object groups to supported/unsupported status for specific Cisco software releases. There is no realistic monitoring scenario to describe for it directly; any actual ping-test polling would go against CISCO-PING-MIB itself.
