Category: Cisco Devices, Network Interfaces

Description: Provides management objects for monitoring and configuring the error-disable port recovery mechanism on Cisco switches and routers.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-ERR-DISABLE-MIB?

CISCO-ERR-DISABLE-MIB lets a network management station configure and monitor Cisco's error-disable feature, which automatically shuts down an interface, VLAN, or other system entity when abnormal conditions are detected (for example BPDU guard violations or excessive link flapping). It exposes global recovery-interval and notification settings alongside a per-feature table describing whether each error-disable-capable feature is configurable, has detection/recovery enabled, its own recovery interval, and flap-count thresholds. This is a fault-detection and interface/software-health MIB: it directly reveals when and why a port or VLAN was automatically disabled due to a detected fault, and whether/when it is scheduled to auto-recover, which is central to diagnosing sudden unexplained port outages. It works alongside IF-MIB and Cisco VLAN MIBs, since the entities it disables are interfaces and VLANs defined there. It is deployed on Cisco switches and routers in enterprise networks wherever err-disable protection mechanisms like BPDU guard or port-security violation shutdown are enabled, making CISCO-ERR-DISABLE-MIB SNMP monitoring a standard part of diagnosing automatic port and VLAN shutdown events.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-ERR-DISABLE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco switch
  • Cisco router with Layer 2 err-disable capability

Monitoring Examples

An operator troubleshooting a suddenly-down port would check cErrDisableFeatureTable/cErrDisableFeatureEntry per cErrDisableFeatureIndex to see which feature (e.g., BPDU guard, port security) has cErrDisableFeatureDetectEnable set and whether cErrDisableFeatureRecoveryEnable and cErrDisableFeatureRecoveryInterval are configured to auto-recover the port. Watching cErrDisableFeatureMaxFlapCount alongside cErrDisableNotifRate would reveal a port repeatedly flapping into err-disable state, indicating a persistent physical or security violation rather than a one-off event. A cErrDisableNotifEnable-triggered trap correlated with cErrDisableFeatureDetectShutdownVlan would show that an entire VLAN, not just a port, was shut down.

What Can Be Monitored

  • global recovery interval
  • notification rate
  • per-feature detect/recovery enable state
  • per-feature recovery interval
  • flap count threshold
  • VLAN shutdown status
