What Is CISCO-IGMP-SNOOPING-MIB?

CISCO-IGMP-SNOOPING-MIB manages the IGMP Snooping feature on Cisco Layer 2 switches, which lets a switch inspect IGMP traffic between hosts and multicast routers so it can forward multicast streams only to ports with interested receivers, including IGMPv3 source-based filtering. It belongs to Cisco's Layer 2 multicast MIB family and exposes global and per-VLAN configuration such as snooping enable state, fast-leave and fast-block behavior, admin/operational mode, leave-query type, address aliasing mode, and fallback timers. This is primarily a configuration/operational-status MIB: administrators use it to confirm the snooping feature and its optimizations (fast leave, report suppression) are enabled and operating as expected on each VLAN, since a mismatch between cisAdminMode and cisOperMode would indicate the feature failed to activate. It builds on the IETF IGMP protocol concepts (particularly IGMPv3 source filtering) without directly extending a specific IETF MIB. It is deployed on Cisco Layer 2/3 switches carrying IP multicast traffic to end hosts, common in enterprise and service-provider access networks. Engineers can download the CISCO-IGMP-SNOOPING-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

Reviewing cisV3ProcessEnabledAdminStatus/cisV3ProcessEnabledOperStatus verifies IGMPv3 source filtering is active where multicast source restriction is required, and cisFastLeaveEnabled/cisFastBlockEnabled indicate whether rapid group-leave optimizations are in effect. If ciscoIgmpSnoopingNotification traps fire alongside unexpected cisOperMode transitions, it would point to a snooping process failure needing investigation on that VLAN.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cisTxGeneralQueries OID:

Select a Cisco Layer 2/3 switches implementing IGMP snooping as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cisTxGeneralQueries into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports the total IGMP General Queries that have been transmitted through an interface. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
