Category: Cisco Devices, Fibre Channel and Storage

Description: Manages Internet Storage Name Service (iSNS) servers for Fibre Channel and iSCSI storage device discovery.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-IETF-ISNS-MGMT-MIB?

CISCO-IETF-ISNS-MGMT-MIB is Cisco's version of an IETF draft MIB (draft-ietf-ips-isns-mib-06) for managing Internet Storage Name Service (iSNS) servers, which provide discovery, naming, and state-change notification for Fibre Channel and iSCSI storage devices on an IP network. It exposes iSNS server instance inventory and configuration: server name, protocol version, network address/type, TCP/UDP listening ports, uptime, and operational role. Its monitoring focus is software/service status of the iSNS server process itself — confirming the server is reachable on its configured ports, tracking uptime to detect restarts, and verifying the server's role — which matters for storage-network discovery reliability in iSCSI/FC environments. It is Cisco's adaptation of an IETF Internet-Draft iSNS MIB, tying it to the broader IETF storage-management MIB effort. It is deployed on Cisco MDS/storage-network switches or IP-storage gateways that host or proxy an iSNS server. Engineers can download the CISCO-IETF-ISNS-MGMT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-IETF-ISNS-MGMT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco MDS storage switch / IP-storage gateway (iSNS server)

Monitoring Examples

An admin polling cIsnsSrvrInstTable can check cIsnsSrvrInstUptime for a given cIsnsSrvrInstIndex to detect an unexpected iSNS server restart, and verify cIsnsSrvrInstAddress, cIsnsSrvrInstTcpPort, and cIsnsSrvrInstUdpPort match the expected listening configuration for iSCSI initiators and targets to discover each other. cIsnsSrvrInstRole indicates whether this instance is acting as the active iSNS server, useful in a redundant deployment to confirm only one instance holds that role at a time. cIsnsSrvrInstIsnsVersion lets an operator audit protocol-version consistency across multiple iSNS server instances.

What Can Be Monitored

  • iSNS server uptime
  • server listening address/TCP/UDP ports
  • server operational role
  • iSNS protocol version
  • server instance inventory
