What Is CISCO-FSPF-MIB?

CISCO-FSPF-MIB is a Cisco-specific SNMP module for the Fabric Shortest Path First (FSPF) routing protocol used within Fibre Channel storage-area networks on Cisco MDS switches. It exposes FSPF protocol configuration such as region and domain identifiers, SPF computation timers, link-state refresh and aging parameters, and a topology database, alongside a count of SPF path computations performed. Monitoring this MIB reveals the operational health and stability of FC fabric routing: frequent SPF recomputations or abnormal link-state aging can indicate an unstable fabric, a flapping inter-switch link, or a misconfigured FSPF domain, all of which affect storage traffic availability. It is specific to Fibre Channel SAN environments and depends on the broader Cisco MDS Fibre Channel management framework, tied to ANSI T11 FSPF standards. It is deployed on Cisco MDS 9000 series Fibre Channel director/switch platforms in enterprise or service-provider SAN fabrics. Engineers can download the CISCO-FSPF-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

An engineer would poll fspfTable/fspfEntry for fspfRegionId and fspfDomainId to confirm fabric domain configuration, and watch fspfSpfComputations to detect an unusually high rate of shortest-path recalculations, which often points to an unstable inter-switch link. Parameters like fspfMaxAge, fspfMaxAgeCount, and fspfLsRefreshTime govern how the fabric ages out and refreshes its link-state database, and unexpected values here can explain stale or flapping topology entries in fspfDatabase.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using fspfMaxAgeCount OID:

Select a Cisco MDS Fibre Channel SAN switches/director as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type fspfMaxAgeCount into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of times any LSR reached fspfMaxAge in this VSAN since the creation of the entry. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
