Category: Cisco Devices, Fibre Channel and Storage

Description: Manages dynamic port VSAN assignment in Cisco MDS SAN fabrics, automating VSAN membership based on device login attributes.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-DYNAMIC-PORT-VSAN-MIB?

CISCO-DYNAMIC-PORT-VSAN-MIB manages the Dynamic Port VSAN Membership (DPVM) feature on Cisco MDS storage-area-network (SAN) switches, which automatically assigns a switch port to the correct VSAN based on the identity (port/node World Wide Name) of the device that logs in. It exposes a configuration table keyed by device login type and WWN, along with row-activation and auto-learn controls, plus notification objects for the DPVM subsystem. Its monitoring value is centered on SAN fabric configuration/software-status correctness: cdpvmTable entries and cdpvmActivateResult reveal whether dynamic VSAN assignment succeeded for a given device login, catching misconfigured or unauthorized device connections before they land on the wrong VSAN. It depends on the broader Cisco Fibre Channel/VSAN management MIB family for VSAN context (e.g., CISCO-VSAN-MIB). It is deployed in Fibre Channel SAN fabrics built on Cisco MDS directors and switches where port-level VSAN assignment must adapt automatically to attached storage/host devices, and SAN administrators typically open a CISCO-DYNAMIC-PORT-VSAN-MIB MIB Browser session to review the DPVM configuration objects.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-DYNAMIC-PORT-VSAN-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco MDS Fibre Channel SAN switch/director

Monitoring Examples

An operator would walk cdpvmTable/cdpvmEntry keyed by cdpvmIndex to see which cdpvmLoginDev (identified by cdpvmLoginDevType, a pWWN or nWWN) has been mapped to cdpvmLoginDevVsan, and check cdpvmActivateResult after invoking cdpvmActivate to confirm the mapping was applied successfully. Enabling cdpvmAutoLearn and later reviewing cdpvmCopyEnfToConfig would show whether learned device-to-VSAN mappings were successfully persisted to the running configuration. A failed cdpvmActivateResult for a given login device would indicate a WWN conflict or invalid VSAN assignment that needs operator attention.

What Can Be Monitored

  • login device WWN and type
  • assigned VSAN per device
  • row/activation status
  • activation result
  • auto-learn enable state
