Category: Cisco Devices, Fibre Channel and Storage

Description: Provides extended SCSI management objects for monitoring SCSI device discovery, targets, and LUN statistics on Cisco storage networking equipment.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-EXT-SCSI-MIB?

CISCO-EXT-SCSI-MIB is a Cisco extension to the IETF SCSI-MIB draft, used on Cisco MDS-series storage networking switches (Fibre Channel/SAN directors) to manage SCSI-level device and LUN discovery across Virtual SANs. It exposes objects for triggering and tracking LUN discovery scans, general SCSI instance information per line card/supervisor module, and tables of initiator/target devices discovered per VSAN, including World Wide Names (WWN) used to identify Fibre Channel endpoints. Its monitoring role centers on software/process status of the SCSI discovery mechanism (whether a scan is running, in progress, or complete, and its completion time) and on visibility into the storage-network topology, rather than physical hardware sensors. It explicitly depends on and extends CISCO-SCSI-MIB (itself modeled on the IETF SCSI-MIB draft) and relies on Fibre Channel/VSAN concepts. It is typically deployed on Cisco MDS Fibre Channel SAN switches/directors in enterprise storage-area-network environments to monitor SCSI target/LUN visibility. Engineers can download the CISCO-EXT-SCSI-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-EXT-SCSI-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco MDS Fibre Channel SAN switch/director

Monitoring Examples

An operator can poll ciscoExtScsiLunDiscStatus and ciscoExtScsiLunDiscCompleteTime after triggering ciscoExtScsiStartLunDisc to confirm a LUN discovery scan completed successfully rather than stalling, which would indicate a fabric or zoning problem. The ciscoExtScsiIntrDiscTgtTable, keyed by ciscoExtScsiIntrDiscTgtVsanId, lists discovered initiator/target device types per VSAN, letting an admin verify that an expected storage array or host bus adapter is visible on the correct VSAN. ciscoExtScsiDiskGrpId and ciscoExtScsiLineCardOrSup help pinpoint which physical line card or supervisor module owns a given SCSI instance.

What Can Be Monitored

  • LUN discovery scan status
  • LUN discovery completion time
  • discovered initiator/target devices per VSAN
  • SCSI instance per line card/supervisor
