Description: Manages Committed Access Rate (CAR) QoS rate-limiting policies on Cisco router interfaces.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-CAR-MIB?

CISCO-CAR-MIB manages Committed Access Rate (CAR), a Cisco QoS feature that rate-limits traffic on router interfaces based on configured thresholds and take conform/exceed actions. It exposes configuration objects defining rate limits, burst limits, and the actions to take when traffic conforms to or exceeds those limits, alongside a statistics table tracking actual traffic behavior against those policies. Its monitoring value is centered on traffic/performance data: administrators use it to confirm that rate-limiting policies are correctly enforcing bandwidth caps and to see how much traffic is being conformed, exceeded, or dropped, which is important for enforcing SLAs and preventing congestion. It is applied per-interface and per-direction, so it implicitly relies on IF-MIB interface indexing to identify where each rate limit policy is applied. It is deployed on Cisco routers at network edges where bandwidth policing or traffic shaping enforcement needs verification. Network engineers researching Cisco CAR (Committed Access Rate) traffic-policing configuration reference this MIB to confirm rate-limit and conform/exceed-action settings via SNMP.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-CAR-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco router (interface-level QoS/traffic-policing device)

Monitoring Examples

An operator would inspect ccarConfigTable, keyed by interface and ccarConfigDirection/ccarConfigRowIndex, reading ccarConfigRate, ccarConfigLimit, ccarConfigConformAction, and ccarConfigExceedAction to confirm the configured policing policy. Correlating this with ccarStatTable reveals actual conform/exceed traffic counts; a high proportion of exceed-action hits relative to conform hits would indicate the configured ccarConfigRate is too low for legitimate traffic demand on that interface, prompting a policy adjustment.

What Can Be Monitored

  • configured rate limit and burst limit
  • conform action vs exceed action
  • traffic conforming to policy
  • traffic exceeding policy
  • per-interface, per-direction rate limit configuration
