Category: DOCSIS and Cable, Quality of Service

Description: Monitors QoS service flow statistics for cable modems on Cisco CMTS platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-CABLE-QOS-MONITOR-MIB?

CISCO-CABLE-QOS-MONITOR-MIB is a Cisco MIB for DOCSIS-compliant Cable Modem Termination Systems (CMTS) that monitors subscriber QoS enforcement, tracking cable modems whose traffic exceeds their registered QoS parameter set and triggering rate-limiting or automated enforcement actions. The data it exposes covers configuration of enforcement rules (registered vs. enforced QoS levels, monitoring duration, sample rate, penalty period, byte-count thresholds, direction) and operational/violation status showing which subscribers are currently being penalized. As a performance/traffic-monitoring MIB it lets a cable operator detect subscribers who are over-consuming bandwidth relative to their provisioned service tier and confirm automatic enforcement actions are firing correctly, which is a software/policy-status function rather than physical hardware health. It is built specifically for DOCSIS CMTS platforms and implicitly depends on the broader DOCSIS QoS parameter-set model for its registered/enforced QoS concepts. It is typically deployed by cable broadband operators on Cisco CMTS head-end equipment to manage per-subscriber fair usage and service-tier compliance. Engineers can download the CISCO-CABLE-QOS-MONITOR-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-CABLE-QOS-MONITOR-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS)

Monitoring Examples

An operator configures ccqmCmtsEnforceRuleTable / ccqmCmtsEnforceRuleEntry with a ccqmCmtsEnfRuleName specifying ccqmCmtsEnfRuleRegQoS versus ccqmCmtsEnfRuleEnfQos, a ccqmCmtsEnfRuleMonDuration, and a ccqmCmtsEnfRuleSampleRate to detect over-usage. When a cable modem's traffic exceeds its registered QoS parameter set, ccqmCmtsEnfRuleByteCount and ccqmCmtsEnfRuleAutoEnforce determine whether the CMTS automatically drops the modem to the enforced QoS tier for the configured ccqmCmtsEnfRulePenaltyPeriod. Reviewing ccqmCmtsEnfRuleRowStatus alongside the rule-violation objects lets an operator confirm enforcement rules are active and correctly catching abusive subscriber behavior in a given ccqmCmtsEnfRuleDirection (upstream or downstream).

What Can Be Monitored

  • registered vs. enforced QoS per subscriber
  • enforcement rule monitoring duration
  • sample rate
  • penalty period
  • byte count exceeding QoS parameter set
  • traffic direction (upstream/downstream)
