What Is CISCO-ATM-IF-MIB?

CISCO-ATM-IF-MIB is a Cisco enterprise MIB that manages ATM interface-level configuration and statistics on Cisco ATM devices, covering interface type, side (network/user), UNI type, and counts of virtual paths/circuits. It exposes per-interface objects for configured PVPs/PVCs, active SVPs/SVCs, and total connection counts, along with global ILMI access filtering and notification enablement. Its monitoring focus is on interface-level operational status: operators track active versus configured virtual circuit counts to gauge interface utilization and detect connection setup failures or unexpected drops in active SVCs/SVPs. It functions as a Cisco enterprise complement to the standard ATM-MIB, adding Cisco-specific interface attributes. It is deployed on Cisco ATM switches and routers providing ATM trunking or access in legacy ATM/Frame Relay interworking networks. Engineers can download the CISCO-ATM-IF-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll ciscoAtmIfPVCs and ciscoAtmIfActiveSVCs from ciscoAtmIfTable to compare configured permanent circuits against currently active switched circuits, and check ciscoAtmIfTotalConnections for overall interface load; a sudden drop in ciscoAtmIfActiveSVCs while ciscoAtmIfNotifsEnabled traps fire would indicate SVC setup failures or a signaling problem on that ATM interface.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using ciscoAtmIfXmitCells OID:

Select a Cisco ATM switch/router as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type ciscoAtmIfXmitCells into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of cells transmitted of this interface, including p2p and p2mp cells. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
