Description: Extends SONET/SDH APS monitoring with Cisco-specific protection group objects.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-APS-EXT-MIB?

CISCO-APS-EXT-MIB is a Cisco vendor-specific MIB that extends the standards-based CISCO-APS-MIB to support path-level APS architectures and non-SONET interfaces such as Cisco's CDL (Cisco Data Link). It augments cApsConfigEntry with cApsConfigExtTable, adding objects like cApsConfigSpan (hopByHop or endToEnd), cApsConfigYcable, search-up interval tuning (cApsConfigMinSearchUpInterval, cApsConfigMaxSearchUpInterval), and APS message-transport control (cApsConfigMessageTransport, none, autoSelect, dcc, apsChannel, ip, or osc, plus cApsConfigMessageHolddown and cApsConfigFarEndIpAddress for IP-based APS messaging), alongside a module-wide cApsNotifiesEnable switch for APS-related notifications. This extension data is useful for confirming which APS transport mechanism and topology (hop-by-hop vs. end-to-end, linear vs. path) is actually configured on a protection group, since a mismatched transport or an unexpectedly disabled notification switch can silently prevent protection switchovers from being reported. It depends directly on CISCO-APS-MIB for the base cApsConfigEntry, cApsStatusEntry, and cApsChanConfigEntry objects it augments, and it is deployed on Cisco SONET/SDH and CDL-capable optical transport platforms running APS protection, as documented in this CISCO-APS-EXT-MIB MIB Browser reference to the extension objects layered on top of the base APS MIB.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-APS-EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco SONET/SDH and CDL-capable optical transport platforms

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls cApsConfigMessageTransport and cApsNotifiesEnable for a protection group to confirm APS messages are flowing over the expected transport and that notifications are enabled; a group configured for 'ip' transport with an unreachable cApsConfigFarEndIpAddress would indicate the two ends of the protection group can't exchange APS messages, risking an undetected failed switchover.

What Can Be Monitored

  • APS span type (hop-by-hop vs. end-to-end)
  • APS message transport mechanism configuration
  • far-end IP address/group name for IP-based APS messaging
  • search-up and switchover-enable interval tuning
  • APS notification enable/disable state
