What Is CIENA-WS-PTP-MIB?

CIENA-WS-PTP-MIB models the Physical Termination Points (PTPs)—the physical signal-terminating ports/interfaces—on Ciena's WaveServer optical transport platform, covering IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol synchronization and coherent modem line-port parameters. It exposes tables identifying each PTP, its ID/name, and its administrative and operational state. Monitoring-wise it is used to confirm the operational status of physical optical line ports and their PTP timing state—an operator checks the PTP operational state to see whether a port is up, degraded, or down, a direct hardware-status indicator for the coherent transport interface. Because PTPs are automatically provisioned by the system, this module builds on a base physical-inventory model shared across other Ciena WaveServer MIBs (alarm and notification modules reference the same PTP instances). It is deployed in carrier/metro DWDM optical transport networks running Ciena WaveServer platforms, particularly where synchronization (PTP/1588) accuracy matters for the coherent modem line. Engineers can download the CIENA-WS-PTP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CIENA-WS-PTP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples

An admin polls cwsPtpPtpStateTable/Entry (via cwsPtpPtpStateTableSnmpKey) to check cwsPtpPtpStateAdminState against cwsPtpPtpStateOperationalState for a given cwsPtpPtpsPtpIndex, cross-referencing cwsPtpPtpIdName from cwsPtpPtpIdTable to identify the physical port. An operational state that drops to down or degraded while the admin state remains "enabled" would flag a physical-layer fault on that line port—for example a failed coherent modem or fiber issue—warranting correlation with the alarm MIB.
