What Is CERENT-TC?
CERENT-TC is a textual-conventions-only support module used across Cisco's Cerent/ONS optical transport MIB family (from the Cisco optical transport business unit, formerly Cerent Corporation). It does not define its own manageable objects; instead it declares shared data types—such as alarm severity, alarm status, monitoring type, location, and port-number conventions—that other Cerent/ONS MIB modules import and reuse. Because it carries no runtime instances of its own, it is not directly used to poll hardware or software status; its value is indirect, ensuring alarm severity, service-affecting flags, and threshold-monitoring types are represented consistently wherever they appear in dependent modules that do expose real device health data. It is a foundational dependency for the wider Cisco ONS/Cerent MIB suite (alarm and performance-monitoring MIBs import these conventions) rather than a standalone standard. It is loaded automatically as a prerequisite whenever an ONS/Cerent optical transport network element's alarm or performance MIBs are compiled or polled, typically in metro/long-haul DWDM and SONET/SDH transport deployments. Browsing the CERENT-TC OID list mainly surfaces these dummy placeholder objects and shared TEXTUAL-CONVENTION type definitions rather than any pollable device data.

Monitoring Examples
This module defines no operational objects itself—only shared TEXTUAL-CONVENTION types like cerentTcDummyAlarmSeverity, cerentTcDummyAlarmStatus, and cerentTcDummyNotifClass (the "dummy" objects exist only to force MIB compilers to register the conventions). There is no monitoring scenario to describe against CERENT-TC directly, since it contains no tables or scalars an admin polls; real alarm/status polling happens in the dependent MIBs that use these conventions.
