Category: Alarm and Event Management

Description: Defines SNMP trap notifications for Cheetah Communications network equipment fault and operational status events.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CHEETAH-TRAP-MIB?

CHEETAH-TRAP-MIB defines SNMP trap notifications for Cheetah Communications network equipment (a maker of ATM/telecom access and switching gear), covering fault and operational status events rather than polled configuration objects. Its objects are a small set of trap-payload variables, a descriptive string and a rate value, bound into notifications under an alt/altSw trap root, used to convey human-readable alarm text and an associated rate/threshold figure when an event fires. This MIB is used strictly for event-driven monitoring of device hardware/software faults: an NMS watches for altTraps notifications carrying altSwTrapDisplayString and altSwTrapRate to learn about a fault condition (e.g., an error-rate threshold exceeded) as it happens, rather than polling gauges. It depends on the base Cheetah Communications enterprise MIB tree (the alt/altSw branch) for its object identifiers and likely complements a separate configuration/status MIB from the same vendor. It was deployed in carrier/enterprise networks using Cheetah Communications access or switching equipment needing real-time alarm delivery. Engineers can download the CHEETAH-TRAP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CHEETAH-TRAP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Alteon Networks (Nortel) ACE switch (legacy)

Monitoring Examples

This MIB defines trap notifications rather than polled runtime objects, so it's honest to say there's no gauge or table to periodically monitor; instead, an NMS configures itself as a trap receiver and, when altTraps fires, reads altSwTrapDisplayString for a human-readable description of the fault and altSwTrapRate for an associated rate value to gauge event severity. This event-driven behavior is the entirety of this module's monitoring value, so there is no periodic polling scenario to describe.
