Category: DOCSIS and Cable, Hardware and Environment, Vendor: ARRIS

Description: Monitors hardware performance measurements including CPU, memory, and card utilization on ARRIS/Cadant CMTS platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CADANT-HW-MEAS-MIB?

CADANT-HW-MEAS-MIB is a private MIB from ARRIS (formerly Cadant) for the C4 Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS), grouping hardware-related counts into a convenient structure distinct from the standard DOCSIS and interface MIBs. Its data covers switch-fabric queue depth statistics and per-card, per-port frame counters (unicast, multicast, and broadcast, plus data-frame variants) for upstream ports. This is directly a hardware-health monitoring MIB: cadantFabActualDepth versus cadantFabAvgDepth reveals switch-fabric queue congestion, a sign of internal hardware bottleneck or a failing fabric card, while the per-card/per-port frame counters in cadantUPortMeasTable let an operator spot a failing or oversubscribed upstream port card by an unusual frame-count pattern. It complements the standard IF-MIB and DOCSIS interface MIBs by duplicating some counters in a hardware-card-oriented layout for ARRIS/Cadant engineering convenience. It is deployed on ARRIS (Cadant) C4 CMTS chassis in cable operator headends, feeding value-added dashboards for card and fabric health built on data from the CADANT-HW-MEAS-MIB MIB.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CADANT-HW-MEAS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • ARRIS (Cadant) C4 CMTS cable headend platforms

Monitoring Examples

An operator compares cadantFabActualDepth against cadantFabAvgDepth to detect abnormal switch-fabric queue buildup, which can signal internal congestion or a failing fabric card before customer-facing throughput visibly degrades. Walking cadantUPortMeasTable/cadantUPortMeasEntry indexed by cadantUPortMeasCardId and cadantUPortMeasPortId, and comparing cadantUPortMeasUcastFrms, cadantUPortMeasMcastFrms, and cadantUPortMeasBcastFrms across ports on the same card, can reveal a specific upstream port or line card processing an anomalous frame mix, indicating a fault or misconfigured cable modem population.

What Can Be Monitored

  • switch fabric queue depth (actual vs average)
  • per-card, per-port unicast/multicast/broadcast frame counts
  • upstream port data frame counters
  • general hardware measurement statistics

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cadantUPortMeasUcastFrms OID:

Select an ARRIS/Cadant C4/E6000 CMT (cable modem termination system) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cadantUPortMeasUcastFrms into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The aggregrate number of unicast frames received on this U channel, whether dropped or passed. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
