Category: Alarm and Event Management, Hardware and Environment, Optical and WDM, Vendor: Cisco ONS/Cerent

Description: Monitors environmental conditions including temperature, voltage, and fan status on Cisco/Cerent ONS optical networking equipment.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CERENT-ENVMON-MIB?

CERENT-ENVMON-MIB is a Cisco (originally Cerent, for its ONS optical transport platforms) proprietary MIB providing environmental status monitoring, covering voltage and temperature conditions on the chassis. It exposes per-sensor voltage and temperature statistics tables, each with a description, current reading, and four configurable threshold levels (very-high, high, low, very-low), allowing fine-grained threshold-based alerting. This is explicitly and entirely a hardware-health monitoring MIB: it lets an administrator track real-time voltage and temperature readings against configured thresholds to catch power-supply or cooling problems before they cause a card or chassis failure. It is a self-contained proprietary MIB without a stated dependency on another standard MIB, though it parallels the general pattern of IETF ENTITY-SENSOR-MIB style environmental monitoring. It is typically deployed on Cisco ONS optical transport shelves and cards in service-provider and enterprise optical transport networks, and administrators can download the CERENT-ENVMON-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CERENT-ENVMON-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco/Cerent ONS optical transport shelves and cards

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll cerentEnvMonVoltageStatsTable/cerentEnvMonVoltageStatsEntry to read cerentEnvMonVoltageStatsCurrentValue against cerentEnvMonVoltageStatsThresholdHigh and cerentEnvMonVoltageStatsThresholdVeryHigh for each cerentEnvMonVoltageStatsDescr sensor, and similarly poll cerentEnvMonTemperatureStatsTable/cerentEnvMonTemperatureStatsEntry for temperature readings. A voltage reading crossing cerentEnvMonVoltageStatsThresholdVeryLow would reveal a failing power supply rail, while a temperature reading exceeding its high threshold would indicate a cooling fault or blocked airflow on the optical shelf.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-sensor voltage readings vs. thresholds
  • per-sensor temperature readings vs. thresholds
  • voltage/temperature threshold breach alarms

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cerentEnvMonTemperatureStatsCurrentValue OID:

Select a Cisco ONS optical transport platform (formerly Cerent) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cerentEnvMonTemperatureStatsCurrentValue into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports the current Temperature measurement at this temperature sensor. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Gauge32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the reported value exceeds the level expected for healthy operation, since sustained high temperature often precedes thermal shutdown or hardware degradation. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
