Description: Manages network topology discovery and cable plant topology information on ARRIS/Cadant CMTS platforms.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CADANT-CMTS-TOPO-MIB?
CADANT-CMTS-TOPO-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB from ARRIS/Cadant for the C4 CMTS platform, covering cable plant topology discovery, specifically fiber node status in a DOCSIS HFC (hybrid fiber-coax) network. It exposes operational status and modem-state-transition counters per fiber node, tracking how many cable modems in that node are in various registration/provisioning phases. Its monitoring value is centered on hardware/network topology health: cadFiberNodeOperStatus reports the operational state of a fiber node, while counters like cadFiberNodeNumInitRanging, cadFiberNodeNumRangingComplete, cadFiberNodeNumStartDhcpv4, and cadFiberNodeNumDhcpv4Complete reveal whether cable modems attached to that node are successfully progressing through ranging and DHCP provisioning or getting stuck. It is proprietary to Cadant's CMTS topology model but conceptually aligned with DOCSIS cable modem registration state machines. It is deployed by cable operators to pinpoint plant-level (fiber node) provisioning problems affecting groups of subscriber modems. Engineers can download the CADANT-CMTS-TOPO-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CADANT-CMTS-TOPO-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- ARRIS/Cadant C4 CMTS
Monitoring Examples
An operator would poll cadFiberNodeStatusTable/cadFiberNodeStatusEntry to check cadFiberNodeOperStatus for each fiber node, and if it shows degraded, compare cadFiberNodeNumInitRanging against cadFiberNodeNumRangingComplete to see whether cable modems on that node are stalling during initial ranging (indicating an RF/plant issue). A sudden gap between cadFiberNodeNumStartDhcpv4 and cadFiberNodeNumDhcpv4Complete would reveal DHCPv4 provisioning failures isolated to modems on a specific fiber node, helping narrow a plant outage to a physical segment rather than a CMTS-wide problem.
What Can Be Monitored
- fiber node operational status
- cable modems in initial ranging
- cable modems with ranging complete
- modems starting DHCPv4/DHCPv6
- modems completing DHCPv4/DHCPv6 provisioning
