Description: Tracks SONET physical layer performance on Zhone Technologies equipment, covering section, line, and path monitoring data.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is ZHONE-PHY-SONET-MIB?
The ZHONE-PHY-SONET-MIB is a Zhone Technologies enterprise MIB for configuring and monitoring the physical-layer attributes of SONET interfaces on Zhone access and transport equipment, covering the section, line, and path layers of the SONET stack. It exposes performance-monitoring counters and current/threshold alarm indicators for each SONET layer, such as error-second counts and defect/alarm states. This is squarely hardware-status monitoring: administrators use it to detect physical-layer degradation on fiber transport links, such as rising line-coding violations or loss-of-signal/loss-of-frame alarms, before they escalate into service outages. It parallels, and likely coexists with, the standard SONET/SDH Interface MIB (RFC 3592) that defines equivalent section/line/path performance objects. It is deployed on Zhone Technologies access and transport platforms, where the ZHONE-PHY-SONET-MIB MIB is used by carriers and service providers delivering SONET-based transport circuits.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ZHONE-PHY-SONET-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Zhone Technologies SONET access/transport equipment
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll the section, line, and path performance-monitoring tables for a given SONET interface to track current 15-minute and 24-hour error-second counts, watching for a sudden increase that indicates fiber degradation or a failing optical transceiver. Alarm-state objects at each layer, such as loss-of-signal or loss-of-frame indicators, would be checked to pinpoint exactly which layer of the SONET stack is experiencing the fault.
What Can Be Monitored
- SONET section/line/path performance counters
- loss-of-signal/loss-of-frame alarm status
- error-second counts
- SONET physical layer configuration
