Category: DSL and Broadband Access

Description: Manages Zhone Technologies DSL CPE node provisioning, port configuration, and profile assignment.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is NPCONFIG?

NPCONFIG is a private enterprise MIB from Zhone Technologies used for node provisioning, port configuration, and configuration profile/backup management on Zhone DSL customer-premises equipment (CPE). It exposes configuration-management data: the current operational state of configuration handling, history size limits for stored configurations, whether the running configuration is being used as the saved one, restore/backup type selection, and a backup table listing saved configuration snapshots with names and descriptions. Its monitoring value centers on configuration/software state rather than physical hardware: an operator can confirm the device's config-save/restore state, see how many historical configuration backups exist, and identify specific named backups, which is valuable for change-management and rollback auditing on DSL CPE. It depends on Zhone's private enterprise MIB conventions rather than a standard IETF module. It is typically deployed in DSL access networks where Zhone CPE units are remotely provisioned and require configuration versioning. Engineers can download the NPCONFIG file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NPCONFIG. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Zhone Technologies DSL CPE

Monitoring Examples

An operator can check npconfigState to determine whether the device is currently idle, saving, or restoring a configuration, and npconfigUseRunningAsSaved to see if unsaved running changes are in effect. npconfigBackupTableTable / npconfigBackupTableEntry lists individual backups by npconfigBackupNo, npconfigBackupName, and npconfigBackupDescription, letting an admin verify a specific rollback point exists before triggering npconfigRestoreType. npconfigCurrHistorySize versus npconfigHistorySize shows how close the device is to its configured backup retention limit.

What Can Be Monitored

  • configuration save/restore state
  • current vs. maximum backup history size
  • list of stored configuration backups
  • running-vs-saved configuration status
  • backup/restore type selection
