Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is Wellfleet-SWSMDS-MIB?
The Wellfleet-SWSMDS-MIB is a proprietary Wellfleet Communications MIB for Switched Multi-megabit Data Service (SMDS), a legacy carrier WAN service supported on Wellfleet routers. It exposes configuration and provisioning data for SMDS virtual circuits along with per-circuit service parameters and statistics counters. Its principal monitoring value is tracking the operational and performance status of SMDS virtual circuits on a router's WAN interfaces, revealing service-level problems such as elevated error or discard counts, rather than general device hardware health. No dependency on other standard MIBs is apparent, as it sits entirely in Wellfleet's proprietary enterprise tree. It was used by carriers and enterprises running Wellfleet routers on SMDS-based WAN backbones, common before frame relay and ATM displaced SMDS. Engineers can download the Wellfleet-SWSMDS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Wellfleet-SWSMDS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Wellfleet router
- Bay Networks/Nortel WAN router
Monitoring Examples
No specific object or table names were extracted for this module. Conceptually, an operator would use its per-VC provisioning and statistics objects to confirm an SMDS virtual circuit is correctly provisioned and to watch for elevated frame discard or error counts, which would indicate carrier-side congestion or a circuit misconfiguration. Because SMDS is now an obsolete technology, this MIB is mainly of legacy interest for maintaining older Wellfleet-based WAN links.
What Can Be Monitored
- SMDS virtual circuit provisioning state
- SMDS service parameters
- per-circuit statistics counters
- circuit error/discard counts
