What Is Wellfleet-SMDS-MIB?
The Wellfleet-SMDS-MIB is a Wellfleet Communications proprietary MIB for managing Switched Multimegabit Data Service (SMDS) WAN interfaces on Wellfleet routers, a metropolitan-area packet-switched service technology common in early-1990s carrier networks. It exposes interface configuration objects (SMDS address, access class) and traffic statistics counters for cells/packets sent and received over the SMDS access link. Its monitoring role centers on link/service health: administrators use it to confirm the SMDS access circuit is registered and passing traffic, and to spot traffic drops or address-screening rejections that indicate a carrier provisioning mismatch. It parallels, without formally requiring, the IETF SMDS Interface Protocol MIB conventions of the era. It was deployed on Wellfleet/Bay Networks routers connecting enterprise sites to carrier SMDS metropolitan-area networks before those services were superseded by Frame Relay and ATM. Engineers can download the Wellfleet-SMDS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Wellfleet-SMDS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Wellfleet router
- Bay Networks/Nortel router with SMDS WAN interfaces
Monitoring Examples
An engineer checks the SMDS interface configuration to confirm the individual and group SMDS addresses match what the carrier has provisioned, then polls the traffic statistics counters for sent/received cells. A high count of address-screening rejections alongside normal cell counts on the wire typically indicates a mismatched SMDS address table rather than a physical circuit problem.
What Can Be Monitored
- SMDS address configuration
- access class settings
- cell/packet traffic counters
- address screening rejections
