What Is Wellfleet-LAPB-MIB?

The Wellfleet-LAPB-MIB is a Wellfleet Communications proprietary MIB covering the Link Access Procedure, Balanced (LAPB) data-link layer used beneath X.25 packet networks on Wellfleet routers. It exposes per-link configuration and state objects along with frame sequencing and error-statistics counters for the LAPB layer. Its monitoring focus is link/software health: operators use it to confirm the data-link state machine is in a stable connected state and to watch retransmission and sequence-error counters that indicate an unstable or noisy serial link beneath the X.25 service. It is closely tied to, and typically deployed alongside, the companion Wellfleet-X25-MIB since LAPB is the frame-level transport for X.25 packet-layer sessions. It was used on Wellfleet/Bay Networks routers acting as X.25 packet-switching or PAD gateways in legacy carrier and financial-network environments. Engineers can download the Wellfleet-LAPB-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Wellfleet-LAPB-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Wellfleet router
  • Bay Networks/Nortel router with X.25/LAPB WAN links

Monitoring Examples

An engineer polls the LAPB link state objects to confirm the data-link is in the balanced/connected state rather than cycling through disconnect-reconnect, then reviews the frame sequencing and retransmission counters. A rising count of retransmitted or out-of-sequence frames on an otherwise 'connected' link typically points to line noise or a timer mismatch with the remote DTE/DCE that will eventually cause the X.25 session above it to drop.

What Can Be Monitored

  • LAPB link connection state
  • frame sequencing counters
  • retransmission/error statistics
  • data-link timer configuration
