Category: Wellfleet BayNetworks WAN Interfaces

Description: Manages Wellfleet OC-12 SONET interface parameters, section/line/path overhead, and performance monitoring.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Wellfleet-OC12-MIB?

This proprietary MIB module belongs to Wellfleet Communications (an early WAN/router vendor later merged into Bay Networks), and it manages OC-12 SONET fiber-optic interfaces on Wellfleet routers. It exposes configuration and status data for the section, line, and path overhead layers of the SONET framing hierarchy, along with associated performance-monitoring counters. Network operators use it to check hardware and link status of OC-12 interfaces, tracking error counters, alarm indication signals, and loss-of-signal/loss-of-frame conditions that reveal a failing optical transceiver or fiber path. It commonly complements the standard IETF SONET-MIB and interface MIB conventions for physical layer status. It would typically be deployed on Wellfleet/Bay Networks backbone routers terminating SONET OC-12 trunk circuits in a carrier or enterprise WAN. Engineers can download the Wellfleet-OC12-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Wellfleet-OC12-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Wellfleet router
  • Bay Networks router with OC-12 SONET interface

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll the section, line, and path overhead objects for a given OC-12 interface to check for B1/B2/B3 bit-error-rate counters and alarm indication signal (AIS) flags. A sudden spike in path or line error counts, or an active loss-of-signal alarm, would indicate a degrading fiber connection or failing SONET card. Because sample object names were not provided for this MIB, this description is based on the short/module description rather than concrete OIDs.

What Can Be Monitored

  • OC-12 section overhead status
  • line overhead alarms
  • path overhead performance counters
  • SONET error counts
  • interface operational state
