Description: Manages CERN White Rabbit precision timing switch port configuration, synchronization status, and link metrics.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is WR-SWITCH-MIB?

WR-SWITCH-MIB is a specialized MIB from CERN for the White Rabbit switch, a precision time-transfer Ethernet switch used in scientific and telecom timing infrastructure built on the White Rabbit extension to IEEE 1588 PTP. It exposes system health scalars covering overall system status, OS status, network status, and PTP/timing synchronization status, along with a boot-success indicator and per-port statistics. It explicitly supports monitoring the hardware and software status of the switch through objects flagging temperature warnings, low free memory, high CPU load, and low disk space, in addition to the higher-level main-system/OS/timing/networking status indicators. Given its reliance on the IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol and the White Rabbit synchronization extension, it clearly depends on that timing standard rather than only generic SNMP MIBs. It is deployed in scientific and telecom timing-distribution networks, such as CERN's accelerator control systems, where operators must guarantee sub-nanosecond clock synchronization and catch resource exhaustion or thermal issues before they degrade timing accuracy. Engineers can download the WR-SWITCH-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in WR-SWITCH-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • CERN White Rabbit precision-timing Ethernet switch

Monitoring Examples

An admin would poll wrsMainSystemStatus and wrsPTPStatus to confirm the switch is healthy and its White Rabbit PTP synchronization is locked, and check wrsOSStatus and wrsNetworkingStatus for underlying OS and network subsystem health. If wrsTemperatureWarning or wrsCpuLoadHigh flips true, or wrsMemoryFreeLow/wrsDiskSpaceLow trips, it signals resource exhaustion that could jeopardize precise time distribution. wrsBootSuccessful confirms the unit completed startup cleanly after a reboot, and the wrsPstatsTable would be polled for per-port traffic counters on the switch's timing/network ports.
