What Is WHISP-SM-MIB?

WHISP-SM-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB from Cambium Networks (formerly Motorola) for the Canopy Subscriber Module, a fixed wireless broadband radio used in point-to-multipoint access networks. It groups objects into configuration, security, status, group membership, and event/DFS-event categories, exposing radio link parameters, session state, and dynamic frequency selection activity. Its monitoring focus is on wireless hardware and link status: signal levels, session statistics, and radio link quality that reveal whether a subscriber's wireless connection is healthy or degraded, along with security and DFS event logs that flag interference or regulatory channel-switch conditions. It is a self-contained vendor MIB, typically used alongside the companion WHISP-BOX (AP) MIBs and standard interface MIBs in the same deployment. It is deployed on Canopy Subscriber Modules at customer premises, polled by WISP network operations centers for link-quality assurance using the WHISP-SM-MIB MIB as the reference for the exposed radio and session objects.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in WHISP-SM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cambium/Motorola Canopy Subscriber Module (SM)
  • fixed wireless broadband CPE radio

Monitoring Examples

An operator would query objects under whispSmStatus to check current signal strength and session uptime for a subscriber radio, and check whispSmDfsEvent to see if the module recently vacated a channel due to detected radar. whispSmConfig and whispSmSecurity expose the configured RF and authentication settings that would be compared against expected values during a link-quality troubleshooting session. A spike in whispSmEvent entries alongside falling signal metrics typically indicates a subscriber link is experiencing interference or hardware degradation.

What Can Be Monitored

  • radio signal strength
  • session status
  • security/authentication state
  • group membership
  • DFS channel-switch events
  • link quality events

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using nbBitsRcvd OID:

Select a Cambium/Motorola Canopy Subscriber Module (SM), fixed wireless broadband CPE radio (signal-level/session/DFS-event status) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type nbBitsRcvd into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. It reports the number of BER bits received (non MIMO platforms only). On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
